Hungary: A New Opera as a Response to Antisemitism

On 13 October 2013, the Budapest Festival Orchestra held the premiere of the opera ”The Red Heifer”, written by the orchestra’s conductor Ivan Fischer. The opera is a response to rising antisemitism in Hungarian society, and is based on a 19th century Hungarian blood libel.
